While your computer is busy folding proteins or improving the lot of humanity, why not fold some paper? Here is a beautiful and practical bookmark design by Kim Best, with artwork by Illiad and folding instructions by me. It slips over the corner of your page, with a pointer that can indicate exactly which quadrant of the page you have reached. Unlike more bulky bookmarks, it won't damage the book, and unlike larger bookmarks, it won't fall out or get knocked out.
A 150 mm square sheet will make a 106 × 75 mm model. The provided image is 200 mm square on A4 paper, which is fine for hardbacks. You may want to scale it to 75% for paperbacks. Copier paper works okay, but you will get better results with better paper. Print out the image (colour laser is best) and trim it to size. I prefer a scalpel and straight edge, but scissors will do just fine. Then fold!
If you want to use the PDF version, then I recommend Foxit Reader.
